    THE FIRST AERONAUT
Hot air is lighter than cold air and therefore rises above cold air. This
principle was used by the French brothers Montgolfier who inade a balloon of
silk and paper and filled it with hot air by means of a brazier slung beneath
it. On the 15th October, 1783, Pilatre de Rozier made the first successful
ascent in history in a Montgolfier hot-air balloon, from gardens near Paris.
The balloon rose , to a height of 80 ft. where it remained for 5 minutes.
