    Description

    1784 Lady's magazine for the month of October containing rare historic content related to the development of and experimentation with hot air ballooning.  The first balloon experiment had taken place in November of 1783.  Articles in this issue of the magazine include one by the title 'Aerostation' on pages 535 through 537 describing hot air balloon experiments carried out by pioneer hot air balloonists Jean-Pierre Blanchard and John Sheldon who were at the forefront of the development of hot air balloon flight.  There is also an article on pages 538 through 540 detailing all the hot air balloon experiments carried out from the first experiment performed on the 21st of November, 1783 through the 25th experiment carried out on the 16th of October in 1784.  There is also an article on pages 540 through 541 describing Jean-Pierre Blanchard's initial experiments with flight.  Among other firsts in flight experimentation, Blanchard is credited with conducting the first balloon flight in America in 1793.
    Also contained within this issue is content on Captain Cook's voyage to the Pacific Ocean.  This historically important magazine issue is comprised of 54 pages which begin on page 507 and go through page 560.
    The magazine is in fair condition with toning and some spotty discoloration as well as wear in the form of some edge tears and some fold creases at the edges.  The three copper engraved plates indicated to accompany this issue are missing.
    ACCURACY OF DESCRIPTION, CONDITION AND IMAGES: The item is described as accurately as possible along with any condition issues. The images show the quality of the item as accurately as possible although because the images were taken using a camera with flash the resulting images may show bright spots or a shine, shadows or color tone variations from flash use and reflection. Computer screens can also vary in how they show images of items so there may possibly be some tonal variation seen depending on the computer screen from which the images are viewed.
