FRENCH POCHOIR HOLIDAY CARD, c. 1920’sClassic Original Art Deco Design!
P-19: Stunning original hand-colored greeting card with exceptionally bright original color!
Pochoir
required the adroit use of pigments and metallic inks applied by hand through finely cut stencils.
This card measures 151 x 120 mm (5 15/16 x 4 3/4”), folded.
Depicted on this heartwarming card is a cozy scene honoring a Dutch Christmas tradition – wooden shoes left by the fireplace, anticipating the arrival of “Sinterklaas” (Santa Claus) – Up until the 1940s, children would find a present in their shoe on December 6, which is officially St Nicholas’ saints day in the Catholic church calendar!
This Pochoir Holiday Card was made in France, c. 1920’s.
This is an original, nearly 100 years old, not a reproduction, and its condition is excellent, as shown in the photos. The colors are particularly fresh and bright.
The card is unused (blank inside) and without envelope.
The
Pochoir Process
was rejuvenated in France in the 1920’s during the Art Deco era. This expensive stencil color application technique pushed the color illustration processes for books and prints to glorious new heights.
The hand application of layers of pigment created dazzling effects that the camera or printing press could not replicate.
