Description
This is a antique Ethiopian Coptic Christian Scroll which is made of goatskin which has been worked into parchment like material called vellum. The writing is in black and red paint or ink and is written in Ethiopic Ge'ez which is the country's earliest language and which has been referred to as the 'Latin of Ethiopia' and is used today only in the liturgy of the Ethiopian Church. Please see 'Ethiopian Magic Scrolls' by Jacques Mercier and 'The coinage of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Italian Somalia' by Dennis Gill for more information. Great Antique condition with some wear from age, an older scroll has been sewn onto the bottom and there is a little writing on the backside. Scrolls where made from three strips of prepared vellum cut into equal lengths and sewn end to end with leather thongs. The Scroll's total length equals the height of the person the Scroll was made for. This Scroll would be an excellent addition to any Ethiopian Christian collection. This amazing antique Scroll has one beautiful painting. Also, when an antique scroll is past down to another person the original owner's name is scratched out or removed from the text and the new owner's name is added, also new prayers pertaining to the new owner are added. Some of these newer written additions have been made in pen on this scroll.
