    Description

Manilla are commodity money made of bronze or copper used in West Africa from before the colonial period until the late 1940's.  They are often associated with the Atlantic slave trade when a slave could be purchased for 8 - 10 manilla (data from 1505).  The manilla were valued by size, material and the sound when they were struck.  They are usually horseshoe shaped with terminations that face each other.  These manilla are Okpoho in origin and between 2.8 and 2.9 oz.  They are 2 3/8" x 2 1/2" x 5/8" and are mostly dark brown/black with some green patina.
