    Description

The US Navy in the Civil War earned a lasting reputation for gallantry and feats of daring, living up to John Paul Jones’ founding creed: "Give me a fast ship, for I intend to go in harm's way". At Mobile Bay, Admiral Farragut lashed himself to a mast top to lead his fleet into battle, Porter ran the guns at Vicksburg to land Grant and his army on dry ground with the enemy, and Winslow aboard USS Kearsarge sank the famed Confederate raider Alabama off Cherbourg in single ship combat. Union sailors in the "War Between the States" were issued the classic M-1860 boarding cutlass for close quarters combat if the captain chose "boarders over broadsides". Original US Civil War M-1860 boarding cutlasses are quite rare today, so over the last 30 years, some faithful recreations have been introduced. This US Union Navy Civil War M-1860 BOARDING CUTLASS is a high quality MODERN REPRODUCTION. It's in very good condition, with a small chip to the blade tip, moderate patina at each side of the blade, some patina to the guard, pommel, and pommel securing "nut", a small hole in the lower right side of the leather grip, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the cutlass is in fine shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it boasts a 26 3/4" spearpoint saber ground blade, sports the classic large riveted brass "bowl" guard, and features a black leather covered grip with twisted brass wire wrapping. It's unmarked as to its maker, though likely dates to the 1970s, and is complete with the reproduction US Union Navy Civil War M-1860 Scabbard in very good condition, with a small gap remaining between the top throat and the ricasso leather "bumper pad" of the cutlass, some scattered scratching and finish abrading to the body, some scattered patina to the throat and end tip, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the scabbard is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough black finished leather construction. Most interestingly, it bears the traditional brass reinforced throat with frog stud and end tip, and the set is a fine representation of a US Union Navy Civil War M-1860 BOARDING CUTLASS.
